A visit to Hylton Castle
Probably the most important
site in
British/American history.
William and Edward Hylton (Hilton) sailed on the
"Fortune" in 1621 to rescue the Pilgrims who had left for America on the
"Mayflower" a year earlier. William Hilton stayed with the Pilgrims and sent for his wife
and children to join him in 1623. The Hyltons started the "Great Migration" to
New England.
Edward Hilton became the founder of New Hampshire. John Davenport, who was the
preacher at the chapel at Hylton Castle between 1615-1619
founded the New Haven colony where Yale University now stands. The visit
includes a walk through Hylton Dene, 200 acres of inner city parkland
surrounding the Castle.
