First recorded in Long Houghton in 1497, this prominent farming family held lands in Northumberland for over four hundred years. Edward Adams was a tenant of 12 farms in 1696. Alexander Adams made a fortune in India and left the estate to his cousin in Vermont, America. Another member of the family, a respectable ship owner went bankrupt.
