It outlines the size of the Hylton estate at that time, and he leaves "in tail male" i.e. in order of inheritance, the manors he held and outlines who should inherit them. It was made at the time King Henry VIII was splitting with Katherine of Aragon and the start of his affair with Anne Boleyn i.e. his split with the Pope, and prior to the dissolution of the monasteries. As Baron of the Bishoprick of Durham, Sir William Hilton was responsible for protecting the church and the monasteries and probably did not know what would happen. He conveyed the manors to other trusted knights and nobles of Durham with instructions of what should happen to his estates if anything happened to him. It was another ten years before the northern rebellion took place against the dissolution of the monasteries when Thomas Hilton, his son was involved. In Sir William Hilton's charter of 1526, he conveyed the manors of; Hilton - where Hylton Castle stands Ford - other side of the river from Hylton Usworth - now in Washington Folanceby - ? Grindon - Now part of Sunderland Barmston - now part of Washington Biddick - now part of Washington All these manors were along the river Wear in Durham Carnaby Wharram Percy Both manors in Co Ebor (Yorkshire) Aldstone (Alston?) Kyrkhaughe (Kirkhaugh) Elryngton (Elrington) All three manors in Northumberland After his own immediate family he mentions; Roger, son of George Hilton, late of Wylome, Co York William Hilton, Brother of Roger; John Hilton, Citizen and Merchant-Taylor of London Adam Hilton of Parke in Lancashire, Esq. Thomas Hilton, Citizen and Skinner (Pelliparius) of London, "- with the remainder, failing these, and all the unlooked for issue of their loins, to his own right heirs forever." We know that a William Hilton, Citizen and Merchant Taylor was the bona fide Body Taylor (Tailor) to King Henry VIII (and therefore very close to what was going on!?!)
