NEWBY of Barber Green, Westmoreland.
From an old Cartmel family, established in the parish in Elizabethan times, descended James Newby, who married 1641 Dorothy Barber of Barber Green. His sons, William (1642-93) and James (1657-1757) were both of Barber Green. William's grandson James (b.1719) had eight sons, who died s.p. except the eldest, Thomas (1757-1843). John the 2nd son, was of Allithwaite and d. at Grange 1843, aged 84; James the 4th son (1765-1834) was long resident in Jamaica, where he was Major of the Colonial Infantry, Superintendant of Middlesex District, J.P. and of the Quorum, and Assistant Judge of Jamaica. Thomas Newby, the eldest son, was of Kendal Terrace, Kendal, and left a daughter and heir, Elizabeth (1789-1867), who married Myles Harrison (d. 1848, aged 65), of Kendal, tanner. Thier only surviving child Mary (1815--46) marr. 1837 Thomas Wilson and had issue. Thomas Newby Wilson (q.v.) Arms;
