The Sandys family originate from Le Sandes near Burgh-on-Sands in Cumberland, in the remote north west of England, and the ancient seat of the family was established at St Bee's on the Cumberland coast.

His father, Edwin Sandys was born at Hawkshead, Furness Fells, Lancashire in 1516. He was educated at Furness Abbey and St John's College Cambridge. He became vice-chancellor of Cambridge University in 1553, Bishop of Worcester in 1559 and Bishop of London in 1570. On March 8th 1575/6 he was consecrated Archbishop of York the second highest of the Lords Spiritual

Sir Edwin Sandys  (1561-1629) became a leading parliamentarian of his day, a member of the London Company of Virginia from 1607 and a member of the King's council for Virginia. He was responsible for the successful founding of Virginia as a British colony.  On 29 July 1615 he was admitted as a member of the Somers Islands Company (now Bermuda) and was elected treasurer of the Virginia Company, 28 April 1619. His brother George Sandys, poet and adventurer became treasurer in Virginia and Richard his third son became governor of the Bermuda company in 1647.  Edwin ended his days as leader of the opposition in the House of Commons.  Two female members of the Sandys family married into the Washington family.
