To celebrate the 400th anniversary of the founding of America we will be holding a series of U.K. Heritage Tours in England and Scotland during the summer of 2007. from the "Original" Washington, England
"DURHAM AND INTERNATIONAL FAMILY HERITAGE"
Visit the fascinating medieval city of Durham , England. Stroll round the magnificent Durham Cathedral, now a World Heritage site, and see Durham Castle, once home to the powerful Prince Bishops of Durham. Attend an evening Reception & Dinner followed by a multi media presentation of the history of the founding of America
"A TALE OF TWO WASHINGTONS"
Visit to Hylton Castle, ancestral home of the Hilton family and St Peters Church (built 674 A.D.) followed by a visit to the nearby Washington Old Hall, once home of the Washington family, ancestors of the First President of the United States of America and Penshaw Monument built to commemorate the First Governor General of Canada. Exploring the maritime heritage and Viking history of the region we'll tour Hartlepool Marina and in the evening we'll attend an Elizabethan Banquet at Lumley Castle
"NEW ENGLAND AND A LAND CALLED MARYLAND"
Visit to Kiplin Hall, in North Yorkshire home of Lord Baltimore, founder of Maryland in America in 1635, followed by a visit to Hilton Monastery in Hilton Village in the county of Durham. This will be followed by a guided tour of Raby Castle, home of Henry Vane the Younger, first elected Governor of New England in America in 1637 and a visit to Bowes Museum at Barnard Castle.
"IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF THE VIKINGS"
To celebrate the discovery of America by the Vikings in 1000 A.D. we'll becrossing the Pennine mountain range , and visit the grave of Eric Bloodaxe, last of the Viking kings of Northumbria. We'll move on to Appleby Castle, home of George Clifford, 3rd Earl of Cumberland, who sailed with 1700 men across the Atlantic in 1598 and took Puerto Rico off the Spanish. We'll visit the fascinating Maritime Museum in the ancient city of Lancaster before taking a cruise down the Lune canal to Carnforth, once home of the Washingtons. In the evening we'll visit Sunderland Point on the west coast and visit the remains of St Patrick's Church.
"A VOYAGE OF DISCOVERY"
We'll take a scenic voyage of discovery up the coastline of Cumbria to Millom Castle home of the Huddlestons (Plymouth America 1623) and on to Muncaster Castle home of the Pennington Family, two of whom were aboard the ship "Discovery" to Jamestown in Virginia in 1607. We'll visit Whitehaven where George Washington's grandmother lies buried and discover the links with the Caribbean, the Rum Story and tales of the slave trade. From there we'll move on to the pleasant town of Cockermouth where Mary Queen of Scots was first imprisoned in England before visiting the ancient border city of Carlisle.
"BATTLES ON THE BORDERS"
A fascinating journey along the Roman Wall and the border between Englandand Scotland to Coldstream, ancient home of the Washingtons and the Coldstream Guards learning about the battles between England and Scotland as we go. We'll visit the famous statue to William Wallace, "Braveheart" On to Hilton Village and the ruins of Hilton Kirk (Church) before visiting the walled town of Berwick, and the village of Lamberton overlooking Hilton Bay in Berwickshire Scotland and on to Dunbar Castle where ancestors of the Washington family were Earls of Dunbar.
"BRAVEHEART & FREEDOM"
We'll take a trip into the heart of Scotland visiting Edinburgh and Rosslyn Chapel, featured in the "Da Vinci Code". and visit Sterling, home of the Wallace monument before moving on to visit the Castle and Cathedral and of course, the famous Golf Course at St Andrews before travelling to London
" TO A NEW WORLD"
Like our ancestors before us we'll see the main sights of London, and visit theTower of London, the Globe theatre, and the Fishmongers Guildhall. We'll take a trip along the Thames to Syon House, originally Syon (Sion) Priory, home of the 9th Earl of Northumberland, the "Wizard Earl" who was "imprisoned" in the Tower with Sir Walter Raleigh. George Percy, his youngest brother who was on the "Discovery" to Jamestown in 1607 became Governor of Jamestown in Virginia during the "starving time" of 1609/10. In the evening we'll see a show at a London Theatre.
